Older versions of Crafty (including 15.4) had the bug that they assumed newly allocated memory to be filled with zero bytes, which is not the case. Since the memory location in question decides whether the search should be terminated instantly, your odds are 1 in 256 to get a working version. The general idea here is to zero the memory where Crafty will load, which can be achieved by various means, the easiest of them being cold booting your machine.
