If Microsoft released a chess program they would simply buy the rights to one of the currently existing commercial chess programs. I don't believe that someone who doesn't already do chess programs would gain much from disassembling someone else's. It is a very advanced field in terms of program implementation, and the programmer has to know what is going on in order to write a good program. You could probably gain something by dissecting someone's inner loops, but it's not like understanding of some small section of someone's code is going to make you a top contender. I worked at Microsoft for seven years and I am still a shareholder. I was never asked to do anything illegal. I never did anything illegal. I never heard of anyone doing anything illegal. If I had found out that someone was doing something illegal I would have made every effort to stop it. The quality density at Microsoft is extremely high, meaning that no matter who you are you will find a lot of people there who are probably smarter than you and/or better programmers. It is a very large company, and so you are going to get little pockets of strange culture, but generally morale is very high, people enjoy their jobs, and they are committed personally to doing the best they can. bruce
