Quite sure it was based on the program Socrates (Don Daily, Larry Kaufman).
Socrates was pre-dated by the program REX.

Don was a regular contributer here in the early years of CCC.
Larry of course most remember from the ICD magazine, which mostly arrived late
in the mail but was greatly enjoyed.
