You _do_ need a 64 bit O/S if you want to go beyoud 4 gigs in your address space, since that is a hard limit for 32 bit programs/operating-systems... 2. You do need a 64 bit compiler that can produce 64 bit instructions, to use the 64 bit hardware. Those already exist, although I don't know how good the opteron support is at the moment...
