Consistent time controls, method of play, etc. As long as these things are held constant, then that setup will provide similar results for similar experiments. In other words, Fritz 5.32 will always play the same on a P90 so we can reproduce the results. What do you expect the results to mean? An ELO rating is a number which (by its difference from other ELO rating numbers) can be used to approximate an expected result from a large set of trials.
