If skip even plies was a good idea then I could expect chess engines to get always odd depth in games and it does not happen. I usually do not use fixed depth in engine-engine game but when I played Fritz against Tiger I found that bigger depth is better and there was no special weakness for the even plies. I check now and I also find skip even plies in help->index->shootout The only logical reason to skip even plies is to save time by less games and it is strange that chessbase only gives illogical reasons in their explanation.
