I agree with the sentiment, but would not lash out at xboard, which I think is a
very useful interface and a fine 2-D board.

Not being a Windows users, I have no idea how you connect Fritz et al to ICC,
FICS, chess.net ..., my program, run a match between machines through a LAN etc.

I would also not lash out at Deep Sjeng: at least you can run it on Linux!
(Which I did not know.  Interesting; and well done GCP.).
