When a Mate in announced with a negative sign in front of it, it means Mate for BLACK. This is why it cannot find the mate in 3 for White in your initial position, because there isn't one. After moving 1.Qe2, it is a mate in 3 for Black. And also, on my P4-2.4 (and I imagine on almost any machine), CM9000 should announce mate in 3 IMMEDIATELY after 1.Qe2 (not five seconds as you mention above). jm
