The others have good suggestions about what engines are available under Linux,
which is an area I'm afriad I know nothing about. :)

I have a few related comments though:

1. I feel it is good to have some engines around the strength of your own
engine in the Gauntlet, else you either win too easily or loose to easily.

2. My in my gauntlet I play 50 matches against each other engine, resulting in
500 games played. I still would like to increase this to 1000, but this takes
too long. At 40/5 all of these 10 matches take a total of about 2 weeks for me
on my spare machine (Duron 800MHz). Before I start such I gauntlet I need to
have had some favourable-ish smaller matches with a new version [say 50 each
against 2 or 3 opponents at 3+3 overnight on my main machine (Athlon 1.66GHz)].

3. I choose opponents that are either without learning, or where I can disable
the learning, as I don't want to be testing against a moving target. The
results are inaccurate enough already without introducing other possibilities
for variation.

Cheers, Tim.
