Hi Mike

I recently asked this exact question in rggc, here is the response that I
recieved.

How does this notation work: 8/8/4b1p1/2Bp3p/5P1P/1pK1Pk2/8/8 b - -
It is a FEN position in Forsythe notation.

Quoting Hyatt
"the idea is to start at h8. each "/" marks the end of a rank.

in the above, there are 8 empty squares on rank 8, 8empty squares on
rank 7, 4 empty squares (a6-b6-c6-d6 followed by a black bishop, 1
empty square, black pawn, and the final empty square.

lowercase=black pieces, uppercase = white. that ending "b" means
black
to move. the - - means (a) no castling possible ( KQ means white can
castle both ways, k means black can only castle kingside). and (b) no
enpassant capture is possible, otherwise it would be the enpassant
target
square."
