Some general comments:
All of these are close enough and high enough, that it does not matter to 99% of
the Chessplayers.
Fritz,Shredder, Hiarcs 9, Nimzo and Chess Tiger 15 are all Chessbase based GUI -
so there is very little difference. Shredder also comes with it's own GUI which
some people like. Chess Tiger also has its own GUI, Chess Partner(Lokasoft ),
which is sold separate from Chessbase. Rebel will also be part of the LokaSoft
family.
CM8777 is a Cm9K personality. The Chessmaster series has been the biggest
seller , but it's is geared more to the casual user/ younger mass market type
user. There is nothing casual about it's engine - it does have a world class
engine - "the King". Chessbase and Lokasoft appeal to the more serious player -
either a high rated player, or even a lower rated player that is seriously
interested in chess (IMO). Chessbase products is probably the favorite of
players rated above 2300 FIDE - but that is just an intuitive guess on my part.
Chessbase also has big following of engine vs engine enthusiasts and is very
popular in Europe and especially Germany.
There are so many plus and minuses for all GUI, it's hard to say which is "best
one to buy" -> "best" means something different to almost everybody. For
someone with restricted finances - "Arena" might be best since it is free.
With respect to engines, I have always enjoyed Crafty since I can make
modifcations and recompile and is certianly more than strong enough for most
users. Genius has always been a favorite, but that is perhaps more for
sentimental reasons. HIARCS and Rebel have, IMO, played the most "human" like
chess. In engine vs engine matches at long time controls , I believe Shredder
7.04 may be the strongest. Ruffian 1.0.5 may be the strongest freeware engine.
Junior, Tiger, The King and Fritz are all top notch as well.
