Subject: Your recommendations welcomed

Hi, I'm new to chess programming, I am interested in coding using either the
xboard protocol or the UCL one. Can anyone provide a link for me to download
something that explains a little about using them, starting with what they are
:|

Also, can anyone recommend a utility that is a graphical chessboard, perhaps
with in-built chess AI, that I can get my xboard/ucl code AI to play against,
and perhaps comes with a manual written using small words? (okay, the small
words clause is optional).
