As well as what other posters have said, you should be aware that you dont
have to be at a terminal node (in terms of strict game definition) to know
whether a position is a win or a loss.

A semi sophisticated evaluation function would be able to recognise certain
positions as a win or loss blah blah by special code. Eg. some kind of pawn race
code when every pawn is a passed pawn, etc etc.
