Whether XML or not, it would be nice to have an (extensible) ASCII-interface
between the engine and the GUI.

In my engine, I basically send messages between the engine itself and the
xboard-adapter. This way, it's trivial to let the engine run on a remote host
and stuff like that. XML would be useful because it would provide us with a
language to describe the ASCII interface clearly. (I'd prefer schemes to DTDs
though)

The important thing is not whether it's XML or not. You can create the same
inflexible, terrible interfaces as before with it. Or you can make much better
ones w/o XML.
