I think, requiring a log file directly after the game would give at least the
same security, if not more. It would be trivial to overtake the time management
of the engine under the current rules. I believe, nobody does want to do it. A
log file could give more info, to see it ("Normally I will use 1 min for this
move, if score goes down perhaps 3 minutes, in exceptional case 5 minutes ..."
could be shown in the log file).
Of course, I like to see the kibitz. I remember, at the last CCT William Rogers
mentioned, that he cannot participate with his (Quick Basic, IIRC) engine,
because of the rules. I have no reason to doubt, that there are really technical
problem, that make it impossible (at least with reasonable effort). For an
engine written in C or C++ and working on any of the main platforms today, such
reasons would not be acceptable. Writing an informative log file should be
possible under any environment.
Thomas made an interesting suggestion (communicating via a file). I fear
however, that this won't be easy, either. One would need to care about file
sharing issues, etc - something that is typically outside of a normal
programming language, and something that may be rather difficult to implement.
At the moment, I would have no idea, how to do it in C.

Dieter
