Very fast computer matches can show you weaknesses in your engine faster than long games will. Often, one engine will "see" something a few moves before the weaker engine, and this makes it very easy to pinpoint weaknesses in an engine. The reason games at longer time controls are more error free is because the extra time patches up those holes in the engine's game, and that doesn't help the programmer improve it. Obviously I am looking at this from a programmer's perspective, and other people may just enjoy analyzing games, and obviously 1 minute games are horrible for that purpose :)
