Agreed; whoever they were, the original designers got it right and everything else is ephemeral tinkering! It's interesting that FIDE has kept away from changing what's on the board although there have been huge changes to time controls, tournament formats and just about everything else not actually on the 64 squares. I wonder whether, in a few years or so, the next fad will be for 10x10 boards, hexagonal chess, 3D chess, kriegspiel, Chinese chess or something else not thought about so far; in any case I'm fairly sure that "Fischer" Random Chess is not original as it feels like something that somebody would've come up with before (being a relatively minor variant).
