Handicap games (between a stonger and weaker player) use to be popular (may still be). I was wondering if anyone has used any of the current programs (Crafty may be a good choice) to estimate the ELO value of the pieces? By this I mean, if I were rated 100 ELO higher than another player, what would be a good piece to spot the player to provide some equality? Is the Queen Bishop Pawn worth 30 point? Is the Queen's Knight worth 100 points? and so on. Just thought this would be an interesting experiment. My method would be something like this: Crafty 16.0 (White with no QB pawn) vs Crafty 16.0 (Black) 20 game match using Winboard. PII-300, PB=Off, Book=Off, Hash=12M each, Hashp=3M each, EGTB=0. Game/30 time. Any suggestions on how to keep from having duplicate games? I could make the first move for white (1.e4, 1.d4, 1.Nf3, 1.g3, 1.c4, 1.b3, 1.f4, 1.e3, 1.d3, 1.a3, and repeat with black missing the piece instead of white). I would be interested in any feedback, is this worth the effort, should I change the method. I can not start this for a couple of weeks, since I will be out of town. So please provide feedback, and feel free to do this yourself and publish here! :) This might be an interesting poll to run before doing the test. How many ELO points is each piece worth? Best Regards, Chris Carson
