P.S. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Configuration 1: 512MB hash, Shredder 7 GUI Run3 (reinstall Shredder 7): 26.hxg6 fxg6 27.Qh4 Bh8 28.f4 1.33 17/47 00:13:40 290880kN 354kN/s 26.hxg6 fxg6 27.Qh4 Bh8 28.f4 1.23 18/47 00:29:07 607161kN 347kN/s 26.hxg6 fxg6 27.Qh4 Bh8 28.Qb4 1.17 19/48 01:06:49 1388192kN 346kN/s 26.h6 Bh8 27.Qb4 f6 28.Qa5 Qc8 1.18 19/48 01:28:54 1841749kN 345kN/s 26.h6 Bh8 27.Qb4 Kf8 28.f4 Kg8 1.29 19/49 01:47:29 2170573kN 336kN/s ... ------------------------------------------------------------------------- It became increasingly obvious that my Shredder 7 installation was corrupt. Almost all operations gave errors. So I reinstalled it, and the above test indicates that it's restored OK. But for how long? I have had to reinstall it several times since I purchased it in July 2003. This time I'm going to be very careful! Absolutely no customizations! Accept all defaults! Etc. I was also careful to uninstall the prior installation completely, renaming all important file/folder remnants, .ini files, and even the layouts. Absolutely nothing, not even layouts, will be carried forward into the new installation. So there's no chance for foreward contamination, and hopefully this installation will last longer! I'm not sure why, but would guess that after some fatal GUI exceptions the files get corrupted. That could have been caused by using the max hash table size of 784MB. So I'll stick to 512MB hash which seems friendly enough with my 1GB RAM computer. That's very fortunate(!), because I discovered that there is a major disadvantage if multitasking with the Classic Shredder 6 GUI. Some files/folders and dialog boxes requiring population by the system are so slow to open/appear that the system is essentially "frozen" while that GUI is running. The system behaves considerably better while multitasking with the Shredder 7 GUI (as I'm doing now), a bit slower than normal, but no freezes. Happy camper here again, for awhile... :) WP
