Do you think I could borrow this tactic for my OTB play?

ps. it indeed seems a bug. I repeated your results with a mating position. You
might circumvent it for now with setting a high threshold, which causes Rebel to
resign before reporting his "trick":) In that case the games are played out
correctly.
