Reversing the fan in the rear did WONDERS. Now drives that were too hot to touch are just warm. I've been running for a day with the front panels off so I can reach in and touch the drives, but I think I'll put them back. I can't imagine that returning the front panels would ruin the great success I've had in reversing that fan in back. I'm tickled pink with the improvement (unscientifically measured as it may be) in the temperature in the case as a result of reversing that rear fan. Thanks to everybody for your kind advice!
