Zappa's problem appears to be null move.

Nd2 NULL Nf3 NULL

And it will take white 3 ply to win in zappa: Ng5 [mate threat] Any Nxe6 Any
Qg7+ and checkmate. So that is a 5 ply threat + 8 ply of null moves = 13 ply :(
