Confusion galore when talking about search depths.
Therefore it's best not to interpret ply notation at all. :-)

Personally (for the 12 in CM's 3/12) I prefer the term nominal depth.
It's comparable to other engines' nominal depth, because they're all nominal.
But that's where the comparison ends since "nominal" carries no meaning by
definition. Except for nominal D+1 being nominally deeper than nominal D of
course, assuming everything else being equal.
