He was playing a couple of unrated games, which he lost against a 1400 player. I don't know how he managed to get such a rating. But, apparently, it can be done. Now ask the correct question: can a human player play significantly better than Kasparov, Anand, Kramnik and the like? Let us return to talk about ratings. This is a matter of critical mass. Once you get some 100 players whose ratings are 2750+, it's likely that some of them, who are in great form during a few years, could manage to play only 2750+ players, and then you bet that, eventually, two or three 2900+ could arise. In turn, when you have a hundred 2900+ players, one of them will eventually be 3000+. Kind of boring IMHO. The important question, from my point of view, is something like this: who was Steinitz? Deepest thinker in chess history- or a clown? A thorough understanding of Steinitz' "bizarre" ideas is going to be next step in chess evolution. Telmo
