Go AMD for sure! the 2600+ is faster then the p4, cheaper+better! You have to remember some things here, mhz is not like mph!!! More mhz doesnt mean faster necessarily.... AMD main goal is most work per cycle, Intels is more most cycles possible (thus high ghz speeds). So the AMD athlon in my opinion, and most, is better for chess because of this... and actually most things.
