The ICGA World Computer Chess Championship is sponsored by the City of Graz,
European Capital of Culture for 2003.
It takes place late November as part of the ICGA's annual meeting which also
includes the 8th Computer Olympiad and the 10th 'Advances in Computer Games'
Conference.
The field will include:
BRUTUS - 3rd in the last ICCA event (2002), with FPGA-assist
DIEP - potentially running on a 512-processor supercomputer
FRITZ - coming direct from its 4-game NYork 'X3D' match against G Kasparov
JUNIOR - seeking to be this year's #1 after winning the ICCA title last yr
SHREDDER - an ex world-champion, going for #1 again
and there will be a strong field of up to 20 chess engines.
There is only one title at stake, that of 'ICGA World Computer Chess Champion'.
There are no secondary titles for amateur/professional, or - at the request of
last year's contestants - for micro/non-micro.
Given multiple processors on a chip, PCs with FPGA-assist etc., the
micro/non-micro divide is becoming less meaningful. Common-platform tournaments
seem attractive, but some engines suit a particular platform more than others.
