Subject: 3D layout and playing strength

I have read numerous times that if one wants to have full playing strength one
must use the 2D board and avoid the 3D. I have run several test positions
swapping from 2D to 3D and have found no difference at all in Genius 7 as to the
time it took to find the solution. I want to use the 3d when playing programs
against each other but have avoided it because of what I have read in the past.
Is there some concensus about this? I seems to me that it is the video memory
that is used and shouldn't affect the strength of the program.
