If you are limited to hundreds, rather than millions of dollars, why not state what you are really after. For instance, to me speed chess is a terrible bore. Why rush through a game when you get better chess at slower time controls? You may like speed chess. What about problem solving. I must admit that this holds fascination for me. Or what about style of play? Perhaps you want a database so you can see what others have done. Or a tutorial to explain nuances so that you can improve your game. Do you want a vigorous attacker that might die just as vigorously, or can you live with a program that plays to a ponderous 140 move draw most of the time? Do you want to peek under the skirts and see what makes the motor run, or just have a black box that humiliates your opponents? Quick, lad -- tell us what yer after. You might beat us to the punch by answering your own question. You see, some rather clever people who know more about the tools of computer chess than you or I have already explained everything in glorious details. You can read these reviews if you want. They are only a few clicks away. But I'm not going to tell you how to get there. You are just going to have to figure it out yourself. You seem a clever fellow. I'll bet you have the answer before the sun rises on a new day.
