There are several extensions:
The most common -- check, pawn, recapture, threat, single move.
Others:
Most anything creating a bonus that you want to be sure will hold.
I increase the value of some extensions when the number of pieces
goes below a particular threshold.
You can fine tune extensions by using fractional extensions. This requires
an increment greater than 1 for each ply.
It is common (correct is a different question) to each ply to one full ply
extension. If you have fractional extensions, they can add up.
Check and pawn should have helped. But what do you mean by limit of 3.
Are you limiting 3 extensions for a complete line searched or 3 extensions
per ply.
