I think it's like an add-on to maximise its results in ways that it couldn't do by using its skill. But the main part of te program should be its skill, and in fact, I consider the playing skill...out of opening book.....to be the WHOLE value of the program. The whole value of a chess program is when it is thinking. Not when it is simply blurting out its pre-programmed data. And, for my personal interest, that is also the case. I want to see great chess, and for the program to be able to stand up to tests in all positions, and to be able to INNOVATE in the openings, better than what already exists in known theory. The opening book competition is a big bluffer, I think. S.Taylor
