Looking on your line, I am also wondering why Gothmog doesn't need a much bigger search depth to find the solution. I spent an hour or so yesterday night trying to find out what was happening, but without success. One of the disadvantages of MTD(f) is that the strange way the game tree is traversed makes it difficult to find out why the program likes a particular move. The PV is always spliced together from the results of several different calls to the search function. My best guess is that the quick solution in this case is caused by some bizarre and mysterious combination of MTD(f), hash table, enhanced transposition cutoffs, various extensions, internal iterative deepening and perhaps some obscure bugs. But at least you are right that Gothmog understands underpromotions. Tord
