Odell, I think you're overreacting to what I said. If I thought your question
was so superficial, I wouldn't even have bothered answering. I make upgrades
too, and yes, keep sight of the increase in strength of my chess software, but I
tend to view it a little differently. The truth is the 50 point gain is somewhat
misleading, as you get a great deal more when increasing significantly your
hardware. The 50 point gain (probably less the further they are searching) is
attached to the one ply or so it will possibly gain in a 40/2h game, at faster
time controls, the relative gain is more because the fewer the plies the more
strength one ply will represent in strength. Also, If I'm analyzing a game with
the help of a program (which I do a lot), then the time saved is enormous! If it
took me a minute to find a decent move with program X and now it takes me 30
seconds, and this for every move times the games I look at, etc.... and suddenly
the time saved is hours, days, etc... But if it's really all about 50 points
then I think the gain from an upgrade isn't very significant.
