There are three new entrants in this edition of
the SSDF rating list. Fortunately enough all three
have received clearly higher ratings than their
predecessors!
The first program which we have tested is Amir Bans
and Shay Bushinskys Deep Junior 8.0 on a single
Athlon 1200 MHz. After 432 tournament games
against other programs, it has now a SSDF-rating of
2748. That is 49 points above it's predecessor
Junior 7.0, which appeared somewhat more than two years
ago.
As perhaps can be understood from it's name, Deep Junior 8.0
is primarily intended for PCs with several processors. When
used on a single processor, the search is said to be slowed
down about 5% compared to Junior 8.0, which we also have
tested. After 545 games Junior 8.0 Athlon 1200 MHz now
has a rating of 2784, 85 points more than Junior 7.0!
The present rating difference between the single and
multiprocessor versions of Junior 8.0 is 36 points. The
slight speed difference between them should give only
3-4 rating points. If the programs otherwise play identically,
and that is what I have understood, the rest must be
attributed to statistical factors.
Since we initially thought about combining the results into
one entrant, they have largely played against different
opponents. The combined rating would be 2768, giving a
rating increase of 69 points compared to Junior 7.0 and
a third place on the list with Shredder 7.04 and 7.0 ahead.
Mark Uniacke has now released a new version of his chess
program, with the opening book made by Eric Hallsworth. So
far we haven't played that many games with Hiarcs 9.0 on
Athlon 1200 MHz, but at the moment it has 2746. That gives
a seventh place on the list, with Shredder, Junior and Fritz
ahead. Compared to Hiarcs 8.0 from 2002, the rating increase
is impressing 62 points!
Compared to the latest rating list from July, Fritz 8.0 A1200
has lost nine points, mainly due to a weak result against
Junior 8.0. Shredder 7.0 UCI K6-2 has lost 14 points and
Ruffian 1.0.1 A1200 has gained six points.
In the nearest future we will continue to play mainly with
Hiarcs 9.0 A1200. If we after a month or so doesn't have
any new commercially available program to test, we will
play with one of the strongest amateur engines.
