My notes:
- While Junior 5.0 is number 2, note the small number
of games (high variance) - it may move around a bit yet.
- Note that Chessbase says a Fritz 5 autoplayer version
will be available to us all in December - some hope
    of ending the "autoplayer wars"
- Full list on the SSDF site, as usual

to the Swedish Ratinglist 7/98, November 7

A majority of the new chess programs usually arrive during the last
months of the year. 1998 is no exception from this rule. But in one
aspect this autumn seems to differ from earlier years. I wonder if the
list of newly arrived or recently announced chess programs ever has
been so long as it is now!

If the two new entrants of this list are included, I can count to 15
very interesting chess programs, all from different chess programmers!
Partly this seems to be due to the new concept of one user interface -
many chess engines. Chess programmers can now concentrate their
efforts on improving the strength of the engine instead of working on
   the inter- face.

During the last months we have played 398 tournament games with Bart
Weststrates new program Kallisto II. It has now a rating of 2446.
Compared to it's predecessor Kallisto 1.98, the program itself seems
to be improved about 40 points.

The other new program is Junior 5.0 P200 MMX, made by Amir Ban and
Shay Bushinsky. So far we haven't played more than 231 games, but it's
fairly safe to conclude that the program is strongly improved compared
to Junior 4.0. If we subtract 79 points for the hardware difference,
there is still 99 points between the two program versions!

Initially Junior 5.0 had very good results against several other
programs, making us believe that we were dealing with a new number one
on the list. But as can be seen, Junior 5.0 would have needed four
more points for the first place! Practically speaking Fritz 5.0 and
Junior 5.0 presently must be considered to be equally strong against
   other chess programs.

Yesterday I received a much longed-for and pleasant information from
ChessBase. In december they will market a CDROM with the new 32-bit
version of Fritz 5 as well as the "old" 16-bit version of the same
   program, both equipped with autoplayers!

In the future SSDF will only use autoplayers which are publically
available. I hope that this decision together with the announcement
from ChessBase will convince all chess programmers to provide
autoplayers for their present and future programs.

Next rating list will appear in December. Atlanta, RISC 2 and MChess
Pro 8.0 will appear on that list. With some luck Hiarcs 7.0 could also
   be included.
