Actually, when we talk about A.I., we are usually refering to "smart" decision making, I'd say. If the options can be easily evaluated and all that remains to be done is do a small alpha-beta search (e.g. Tic-tac-toe), it's is not often regarded as AI, but machine-like operation. In chess you have to find a "smart" compromise between extending and pruning so that your engine is not wasting its time. Test an engine designed to be effective under "normal" circumstances by giving it an extremely improbable test that it will never encounter proves nothing!!! Regards
