The following selection from my own posts might clarify some things.

| I'm sure the code (and data!) can easily be optimized to run 2x or 3x faster,
| but that's rather pointless as long as there are no tournamtents to play.
| It would still be fun though. :-)
The fun was intended to apply to optimizing, not to playing.

| [declining Tim's offer of GLC-P.EXE to play]
| But more importantly, it seems pointless to play this game on an 8x8 board.
| The initial position will be solved tomorrow, and a small opening book will
| suffice to win all games. That's assuming White does win, based on the seqence
| sofar: =-=+=+= for symmetrical baseline positions 1 through 7.
Admittedly I was bluffing about tomorrow, it took slightly longer.

| 1. d4? d5? 2.g4 wins (see the earlier d4d5 run)
| 1. d4? b5! draws (see D29)
| 1. c4 mate in 19 or 18
| 1. b4 mate in 18
| Assuming no bugs of course.
Since there actually was a bug, the reported lengths may be 1 move too long.

BOTTOM LINE
The Pawn Game is easy to pick up because of its simplicity.
(Even though double move and en passent are included).
That's the reason Lev Alburt recommended it for kids.
That's the reason Edward Seid coined it here as a programming exercise.
But it turns out to be too simple too spawn computer competition.
