For a long time, Phalanx has been my favorite sparring partner for my
engine Gothmog, for two reasons. The first reason is that Phalanx is about
the right strength. It is strong enough to beat my engine convincingly in
long matches (the score usually ends up somewhere between 60% and 70% for
Phalanx), but not strong enough to leave Gothmog without a chance in every
single game. The second reason is that the styles of these two engines lead
to some really spectacular games.
The following blitz game (played at a time control of 4 minutes per game,
with 2 seconds increment, on a Pentium IV 2.4 GHz) was played earlier today.
White's wild sacrifical king hunt was almost certainly unsound, but black
was unable to find a defence at this fast time control. The game is well
worth playing through, in my very subjective opinion. :-)
Do any other engines like the moves 15. Bc4?! and 18. Rd7!? ?
