You are probably right. Being a weak human player myself, I thought it
looked like an interesting and unexpected tactical shot, but I suppose
it is a rather obvious move for a computer program (and probably also
for strong human players).

No, I don't. I would like to experiment with singular extensions some
time, but they look terribly messy to implement right (in particular,
handling the case when a singular move fails low when it is re-searched
with extended depth).
Currently, I don't have any unusual extensions at all. However, my
king safety evaluation can return very big values (theoretically they
can be as big as 12 pawns or so), which sometimes result in interesting
long-term sacrifices. Nine out of ten times it backfires in games
against computer opponents (less often against humans), but I think
the interesting games I see once in a while compensate for this.
