Utzinger's NBE 2003 tournament is being played without opening books. Here is a survey of what the programs chose to do in the 1 e4 section. Choice as Black: Fritz 8 plays Petroff always. Junior 8 plays Sicilian always. King 323 plays French always. List 504 plays Scandinavian always. Shredder 704 plays Petroff always. Tiger 15 plays Petroff always. In the games of Hiarcs 8 and 9 after 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 : List and Junior chose Scotch. King and Shredder chose Ruy Lopez Exchange. Head to Head was Two Knights Tiger and Fritz go Two Knights except one Giuoco Piano chosen in Tiger--Hiarcs 9. In the 1 d4 section the openings were not theoretically critical but here they are.
