Part of what makes this problem so frustrating is that it doesn't occur in other operating systems, and I rarely have access to Windows computers, and almost never for more than a short amount of time. Besides, I am also almost completely Windows-illiterate. Installing the cygwin tools was one of the most frustrating, painful and time-consuming tasks I have done on a computer, and I really don't like the thought of trying to install more Windows software.
