I think the logic is this (from an amateur): Black wants to castle Q and play g5
which will give him at least one open file and kingside chances (although I
still like white's centralized game).  But if Black plays 0-0-0, white plays
Bxf7 and picks up a pawn.  If Black plays e6, then white has Bxe6 which seems
very dangerous if not outright winning.  So Black plays Bg8, and now he can
castle, play e6, and g5.  Of course, White will be busy on the Queenside and
center during this time, but at least black has chances.
