Hiarcs 9 sees the draw without tablebases too of course, it just doesn't evaluate 0.00. The simple material difference would be +2.00 for white, but H9 immediatly evaluates ~0.35 only. This indicates it that it sees White cannot win (KB-K is a draw), IOW the bishop has not much of a value here anymore. (And the other replies are mostly nonsense :-)) P3/700, no tbs.: Analysis by Hiarcs 9: 1.Bc6 Kf6 ² (0.32) Depth: 1/4 00:00:00 1.Bd7 Ke7 2.Bc8 Kf6 ² (0.38) Depth: 3/7 00:00:00 ² (0.35) Depth: 3/7 00:00:00 1.Bc2 Ke6 2.Bd3 Kd5 ² (0.37) Depth: 3/7 00:00:00 ² (0.37) Depth: 3/7 00:00:00 1.Bb3+ Kf6 2.Bc2 Ke6 3.Bd3 Kd5 ² (0.38) Depth: 3/8 00:00:00 ² (0.38) Depth: 4/8 00:00:00 1.Bb5 Ke6 2.Bc4+ Kd6 3.Bb3 Kc5 ² (0.40) Depth: 4/8 00:00:00 ² (0.39) Depth: 5/10 00:00:00 1kN 1.Bb3+ Ke7 2.Bd5 Kd6 3.Bc4 Kc5 4.Bf1 Kd4 5.Ba6 Kc3 6.Be2 Kd2 7.Bf3 Ke1 ² (0.40) Depth: 5/10 00:00:00 2kN ² (0.34) Depth: 13/22 00:00:07 1525kN Btw. you should consider to install all the 3- and 4-piece tbs. at least, to your HD and configure the H9 GUI accordingly. The H9 CD has most of these tablebase data. A few 4-piece tables which are missing (no important ones) can quickly be generated with a small generator program which is included too. See the F1 help for the "how to" of the tablebase configuration and usage. It's easy. Then, positions like yours will be evaluated and played perfeclty, like KBN-K, KQ-KR etc. For the position above, moves will be listed all with eval 0.00 like 1.= (0.00) 1.Bd7 2.= (0.00) 1.Bc2 (etc.) Most engines access that information during the search already. Very useful, for example: Teststellung J.Moravec - [+0100.02h8g1] [D]7K/6p1/8/7p/8/8/R7/6k1 w - - 0 1 Analysis by Hiarcs 9: 1.Kh7 g5 ± (1.27) Depth: 1/7 00:00:00 1.Ra5 g6 +- (1.59) Depth: 1/7 00:00:00 +- (1.59) Depth: 1/8 00:00:00 (...) 1.Ra1+ Kg2 2.Ra4 g5 3.Ra2+ Kg1 ± (1.35) Depth: 9/20 00:00:02 235kN, tb=1294 = (0.05) Depth: 12/27 00:00:24 4307kN, tb=21320 1.Kh7 h4 2.Kg6 h3 3.Kg5 h2 4.Kg4 h1N 5.Kf3 g6 6.Rc2 g5 = (0.05) Depth: 12/27 00:00:25 4622kN, tb=23246 +- (#30) Depth: 18/29 00:00:48 10235kN, tb=83495 1.Kh7!! There are also all possible 5-piece tbs. available (even some 6-piece). With the KR-KPP table, a chess program would show the solution of the study above even immediatly. Regards, M.Scheidl
