Go to http://www.chessassistant.com and download Chess Assistant Lite. Make sure
you get the Fonts also. With it, free of charge, you can make diagrams for MS
Word in two different ways. First you need to set up a position though:

a) Open a new board with the 'Add a New Game' button. (you may have to click on
a base in the Explorer area on the left to activate the button)

b) Right-click on the board and select 'Define Position'.

c) In the small window, setup your position (you have some options by
right-clicking on the mini-board) and click OK when done.

Now you should have the board in front of you. There are two ways now:

1)

- Right-click on the board with the position you want, and select Clipboard and
then Export bitmap.
- Now just paste it in Word.

NB: The size of the diagram is determined by the size of the board you are using
(right--click to change it). The colors of the board can be changed by
right-clicking on the board, selecting 'This Window's Properties', and then the
drop-down menu where it says 'background type'. This requires no font.

2)

- Add a diagram to the notation (requires fonts to be installed) by selecting
the Add/Delete Diagram button under the Comments tab looking like an empty
board. Or you can use the easy shortcut Ctrl-D which alternately adds a diagram
or removes it.
- Go to the Print menu at top and select Export. Choose the Rich Text Export
choice. This will create an RTF document with the diagram for Word using the CA
fonts.

NB1: If you wish the diagrams to be readable by all not requiring them to also
have the fonts, then in Word, go to the Tools menu, select Options, then the
Save tab, and activate Embed TruType fonts, and save it again.

NB2: If you wish to change the size of the diagram, either highlight it all in
Word and select a new font size, or alternately go to the Tools menu in CA,
select Options, then the 'Fonts and Colors' tab, click on Diagram and change the
size. It will change the default size of the diagram in the notation this way.
