Hello, Stuart! I think the other people who have answered your post didn't really understand your problem. You probably expected the programs you downloaded to ship with a graphical user interface, which most amateur programs don't. Most of the programs are simply "chess engines". In order to play against them, you have to download a GUI separately. In Windows, the easiest one to get started with is probably Arena, which you can download from http://www.playwitharena.com. Arena ships with some (rather strong!) chess engines which you can play with right away. It should also include instructions about how to install additional chess engines (the "mysterious files" you describe above). Good luck! Tord
