The square is off the board if (index & 0x88)!=0, not if (index & 0x88)=0x80 or
0x88 or 0x08.
0x08 is set for the unused board on the right. If an index is off the top or the
bottom of the board the 0x80 bit is set. So a square is on the board if
(index & 0x88)=0.
