If you want to run a heavy duty server on a low budget, Linux is probably the only choice worth considering. If you mean chess software (and i hope you do in this forum) then there are two issues to consider: 1. How easy it it to write for Linux instead of, or as well as something else? Answer: really easy. Many of the amateur and research chess programs are done only on Linux. Many more run on Linux as well as other systems. This includes Crafty. 2. How easy it to sell chess programs for Linux? Answer: probably a lot harder than for Windows, because Windows is what most chess players have on their computers at home.
