No matter how fast your machine is, if the chess program plays at its best, it
will use _all_ of your ressources to be as good as possible. This will most
probably have a slow down effect on any machine.

If you get a faster machine, maybe with two or more processors, it _might_ not
be so noticeable, but it will occur.

Playing chess is some of the hard work for computers, calculating and
calculating as much as the hardware can deliver.

Just enjoy chess, and don't work in the background ;-)
