No matter how fast your machine is, if the chess program plays at its best, it will use _all_ of your ressources to be as good as possible. This will most probably have a slow down effect on any machine. If you get a faster machine, maybe with two or more processors, it _might_ not be so noticeable, but it will occur. Playing chess is some of the hard work for computers, calculating and calculating as much as the hardware can deliver.
