IMO the people, ssdf, other people, should be interested how strong chessmaster is. If chessmaster is weaker in the default mode, and there are settings that make it stronger, why not testing it in those settings. Of course you can argue: if the setting XYZ is stronger, the programmer could put it as default. or: if johan wants to have CM use this or that book, he could make a book working with it. of couse you can question all this. but it will not help us finding out how strong CM is. The ssdf make an exception. IMO it is a good idea THIS TIME. i often complained when they made EXCEPTIONS favouring Chessbase products, because i believed that a monopolist like chessbase has ADVANTAGES enough to destroy the market-order, but in THIS CASE the exception is IMO ok because we all know CM is a serious and strong engine and should IMO be recognized by the ssdf. Of course an exception is never really FAIR. On the other hand it satisfies all the wishes of those who want to see CM beeing evaluated by the ssdf. This seems to be a no win situation. All kind of sides are pissed :-)) IMO the ssdf should continue testing CM, so that we get an ELO first. Later one can try to change the setting for CM the way ALL people are satisfied. when an engine is not running PERFECTLY in another GUI, the reason is marketing. the companies don't WANT this, because they cannot make money when everybody exchanges the engine via internet-zip-file and let it run in the CB-GUI or whatever WINBOARD GUI. A companie needs to make money, otherwise the programmer cannot live and develop the program. The end-user is not interested in all this. he wants to know about chess strength.
