In general, when I wrote my mate solver, in around 1993 - 1995, I used many best programs available there in order to verify position with mate. To my big surprise I found that some programs do count distance to mate with difference of one, and more than half of them are just buggy in this matter. Even now I don't know what is the reason for this. My only guess is that mate there is not looked based on logic that recognize perfect mate but on material advantage. Leonid.
