the reason the engines suggest 1...Kd8 is simple: it defends the bishop on e7
indirectly. if you were to take it this happens 2. Rxe7 h2+! 3. Kg2 h1Q+ 4. Qxh1
Kxe7 (or ...Qc6+ 5. Kg1 Qxh1+ 6. Kxh1 Kxe7) - black wins the exchange. If white
deviates from this with 3. Kxh2? or 4. Kxh1 he is mated instantly.
so the whole point of playing 1...Kd8!? is that it refutes 2.Rxe7 because the
rook on e7 will be taken by the king on d8 - which obviously would not be the
case if you played 1...OOO.

it seems that the line given above is easier for the computer to spot than the
win after 1...OOO/OO 2. Rxe7 - and therefore it is given as main line for a
while, before the program realizes that the bishop on e7 cannot be taken either
after OOO/OO.
